Self-Publishing the Fine Art Photography Book

Ricardo Barros created Image Spring Press to produce Facing Sculpture: A Portfolio of Portraits, Sculpture, and Related Ideas . The completed books were entirely paid off when delivered to his studio. Barros managed this by: raising over $60,000.00 through print sales to collectors and museums; bartering usage of his images for a year-long, full-page ad campaign in an art magazine with an international circulation; bartering for the warehousing of his inventory; and by enticing top-quality designers and editors to believe and participate in the project.

This slide talk lays out a road map for the self-publication process. Major themes addressed include: The Personal Photographic Project; Translation to Book Project; Commercial v. Self-Publish; Fund Raising; Book Production; Marketing; Distribution; Example Treatments of Imagery, Text and Layout; and one business model for all of the above. "Facing Sculpture's" inspiring portraits, texts and illustrations are used as a framework for discussion.
