Photo Cube
My photo cube is a spinoff of the 360-degree panorama project. This image is made with an algorithm that processes 360-degree information and renders it as the six faces of a cube. I printed those six faces and pasted them onto a physical cube. My ‘photograph’ became a sculptural object.
I think of my photo cube as an Artist’s Book. In it, I am telling a story with a nonlinear narrative. Spoiler alert: my story is of a wooden artist’s mannequin escaping bondage. He jumps off his armature, runs across the room, and dives behind a corner. This story would unfold linearly in a library book as a reader turned each page.
Here we still have pages, but they are represented by the sides of a cube. The physical cube must be handled in space for the story to be read, and the cube can be rotated on any axis. The starting point is random, depending on how the previous reader set the cube down. There is no apparent “next page” to turn. So, the experience of reading this book entails discovering an orientation as well as piecing a narrative together.
