In May of 2022, I was invited to become a Contributing Writer to ICON magazine, a publication at “The intersection of art, entertainment, culture & mad genius.” I was assigned a feature to appear in every issue, portfolio, presenting one of my photographs accompanied by a concise essay. I saw this as an opportunity to reflect on my more than 50 years of experience as a professional photographer. So, rather than tell an anecdotal backstory about each picture’s making, I chose to share what I learned through the picture-making process. Hopefully, these insights will be helpful to other artists, especially photographers, at an earlier stage of their journeys.
